Village improvements took center stage at the Nov. 17 Malvern Village Council meeting, where members approved covering additional costs for this year’s paving project and heard strong praise for the contractor’s work.

The final paving total came to $74,582, above the original estimate of $70,000. Council approved the additional amount after Village Administrator Derik Kaltenbaugh explained that extending the project area increased the cost but still resulted in significant savings.

“Superior Paving did a fantastic job on the paving; we saved a lot of money because they were around and did not have to mobilize,” Kaltenbaugh said.

In addition to paving, council reviewed upcoming winter preparations. The Cintas boot truck is scheduled to visit to equip village employees with cold-weather gear, with one staff member needing a full new set.

Kaltenbaugh reported the village truck is now equipped with a salt box following a recent trace snowfall that left the bridge icy. Council member Tom Holmes said the bridge was dangerously slick during that time, and council and Kaltenbaugh agreed it should be checked first during freezing weather.

In other business, council:

— HEARD Sheets-Eick Electrical is scheduled to install the village’s Christmas lights Nov. 19, and the village continues efforts to schedule the vac truck for maintenance work.

— LEARNED that EOG is preparing to sign an agreement to annex water to the village if infrastructure is ever extended to its site, with signatures expected the next morning.

— HEARD the ambulance district reported 98 calls last month and said most of the remodeling in the ambulance building has been completed.

— PAID the village bills of $22,051.16, approved by the Finance Committee Nov. 17, and biweekly payrolls of $6,402.34 paid Nov. 20.

The next meeting will be held Dec. 1 at 7 p.m.
