Leesville waives late fees for July and August utility bills

At its August meeting, Leesville Village Council voted to waive late fees for sewer utility customers for the months of July and August.

Mayor Mara Dai Malterer told council the delay was due to a change in fiscal officers at the end of July, which caused bills to be mailed about a week later than usual. Council unanimously approved Resolution 2025-5, making the forgiveness of late fees official.

In other business, Malterer reported discussing a sidewalk issue with Smitty’s Tree Service. The company had agreed to reduce the cost of services or help cover the cost of replacing a sidewalk that was supposed to be lifted and replaced. Council members said they were pleased with the work done by Smitty’s and agreed to move forward with a replacement project, with Councilman John Traxler and employee Rich Albright doing the work.

Council also: 

— Learned the last date to order veterans banners is Aug. 27. 

— Received an update on the proposed trail through the village.

 — Learned a picnic table had been donated to the village park. 

— Discussed installing new street signs and ordering additional stop signs. 

— Heard receipts reported at $5,856.23 and approved expenses of $6,606.99. 

— Agreed to contact the state auditor’s office for an official audit. 

— Approved mileage reimbursement of up to $100 for Fiscal Officer Kaley Knapp to attend training in Athens, Ohio.

The next council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at Village Hall.
