Leesville council prepares to install veterans banners, begin storm sewer project
Council discusses traffic concerns, new signage, and sets trick-or-treat for Oct. 31 during October meeting
At the October meeting of the Leesville Village Council, Mayor Mara Malterer reported that the veterans banners were delivered a week early.
Malterer said that before the hardware and banners could be hung, an agreement with AEP was required for the use of their utility poles. She said she had submitted the required information and that the agreement is now in place.
Malterer further reported that the banners will be hung as soon as possible and will stay up through the end of November, when it is time to decorate for the holidays.
Malterer also reported that the in-person engagement of the committee for the proposed TAP trail, at a recent football game, had gone very well. She said multiple surveys had been submitted for evaluation and that the survey is available on the Village of Bowerston’s website at www.villageofbowerston.org.
Councilman Bruce Palmer reported that two streetlights are out on Green Street and that AEP has requested not only the submission of pole numbers on their website but also that caution tape be tied around the poles for easy identification.
Malterer advised that she had hosted the preconstruction meeting for the storm sewer project and that work is expected to begin in late November, with completion anticipated by the end of 2025 or early 2026.
In other discussion, Councilman John Traxler noted that traffic on side streets and alleys has increased with vehicles attempting to get ahead of trucks on state Route 212. Traxler said he feels this is dangerous and would like to look into installing speed bumps in some locations.
In other action, council:
— Learned that one of the new street signs had incorrect spelling and is being replaced with PEP grant funds
— Was advised that a resident is looking at putting skirting on a structure without a foundation and that the issue is being addressed by the solicitor
— Heard receipts reported at $6,323.10 and approved expenditures of $7,573.07
— Set trick-or-treat for Friday, Oct. 31, from 6-8 p.m. Residents interested in participating should turn a porch light on
— Set the next regular meeting of the Leesville Village Council for Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. in the village hall
