The 44th annual Great Trail Festival will be held Aug. 23–24 and Aug. 30–31, continuing through Monday, Sept. 1, at the Great Trail Festival Grounds on state Route 43, just south of Malvern. The event re-creates the French and Indian era and celebrates early frontier life near the historic Great Indian Trail.
The festival spans two weekends and features historical demonstrations, artisan vendors, traditional music and family-friendly entertainment.
Marketplace highlights frontier craftsmanship
An 18th-century marketplace will showcase high-quality crafts by selected artisans and craftspersons. Visitors can find handmade leatherwork, pottery, primitive folk art, herbals and florals, as well as live demonstrations in spinning, weaving, quilting and basketry; soap making, woodworking and instrument crafting; and flint knapping, blacksmithing and silversmithing.
Traditional music and cultural performances
The entertainment lineup includes Appalachian musicians, Scottish pipers, show fiddlers, clog dancers and folk music for all ages.
Buckskin rendezvous
The Buckskin Rendezvous will feature buckskinners, fur trappers and blanket traders; teepee lodges and open campfires; and cannon firing.
Frontier-style food and treats
Festival food includes ham and bean soup with johnnycake; buffalo burgers, Indian fry bread and funnel cakes; roasted almonds, copper kettle popcorn, nut rolls, pumpkin rolls and ice cream.
Buffalo herd exhibit
A herd of American buffalo — the first re-established in Carroll County since the species disappeared from Ohio in the late 1700s — will be on view throughout the event.
