Next week, Oct. 5-11, is Fire Prevention Week throughout the United States, according to the first presidential proclamation made in 1925 by former President Calvin Coolidge.

During the week, several firefighters from area fire departments plan to visit schools and conduct fire safety programs.

According to Brown Local School Superintendent Danielle Hawk, the Malvern Elementary principal has coordinated with a parent who serves on a local fire department. They, together, are planning various events throughout the week to educate students on the importance of fire safety and fire prevention.

History of Fire Prevention Week

Fire Prevention Week is observed each year encompassing Oct. 8 in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire. The Great Chicago Fire occurred Oct. 8, 1871, and killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres of land.

How to celebrate Fire Prevention Week

Test your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. If the detectors are battery operated, this is a great time to change the batteries.

Have a home escape plan and designated meeting place in the event of a fire. Go over the plan with everyone in your household and practice the plan. Once you get out, you stay out.

Talk to children about the dangers of fire and what to do in case of an emergency. Dial 9-1-1.

Contact the following fire departments at 330-627-2141 for more information on fire safety tips.
