From theater reopenings to athletic triumphs, a snapshot of local history from 1965 to 2015

60 YEARS AGO 

From 1965 FPS Files 

The Virginia Theater on West Main Street in Carrollton reopened following its purchase by the three Myers brothers — Henry, Jay and Richard. 

The abandonment of a 5.2-mile section of state Route 171 between routes 9 and 39 in Washington and Fox townships was approved by Ohio Highway Director P.E. Masheter. 

Carroll County Granges selected Patricia Rinehart and Alan Rininger as princess and prince to compete in the state Grange contest. 

A lot of hard work, bruising football, along with fine marching band entertainment, were witnessed at the annual Carrollton High School–Minerva game, which the Warriors won 6-0 on the latter’s field. 

50 YEARS AGO 

From 1975 FPS Files 

The Van Horn building, the oldest in Carrollton and built in 1829, got a fresh coat of paint and was then known as the Saltsman building on the corner of West Main Street and North Lisbon Street. 

An estimated 5,000 persons attended the fly-in sponsored by the Carroll County Airport Authority at the Carroll County Airport. 

Roger Graham of Dellroy was elected chief of the Carroll County Caledonian Society. 

Warrior Players of the Week included Richard Wright, Mark McConnaughy, Lyle Drake, Jack Schoolcraft and Rick Burns. 

40 YEARS AGO 

From 1985 FPS Files 

The Bureau of Employment Services, located in a trailer at 704 Canton Road on the former Reed Brothers property, was closed temporarily and all the records were moved to the Canton BES office until a new location was found. 

Six candidates were seeking the two seats on the Carrollton Board of Education. They included David J. Bodo, Nancie P. Borland, Gordon Evans, Harold (Pete) Ray, R. Herbert Rutledge and Lewis Thomas. 

The Warriors shellacked visiting Athens 19 to zip behind Ian Peterman’s two touchdowns and extra-point kick. 

30 YEARS AGO 

From 1995 FPS Files 

Carroll County’s new Volunteer Fire Department building on state Route 9 was dedicated, along with a meeting room named in memory of a former fireman, Roy Swinehart, who served as a member of the Carroll County Volunteer Fire Department from 1989 until 1992, when he was fatally injured. 

Four women were vying for the Carrollton clerk-treasurer’s job. They included Betty Davis, Judi Noble, Vickie Reed and Barbara Roudebush. 

Harry Anderson, an 85-year-old former teacher and businessman, was the subject of a feature story in the Oct. 25, 1995, issue of The FPS. 

Minerva and Carrollton faced each other in their annual football battle, and the Lions easily captured a 38-0 win. 

20 YEARS AGO

Diebold’s new AccuVote-TSX touchscreen electronic voting machines were placed in operation by the Carroll County Board of Elections. 

Dennis (Denny) Hoobler, a native of Dellroy and current assistant athletics director of development, was part of Ohio State University’s $92 million athletic budget when he spoke at the Ohio State Alumni Club of Carroll-Harrison Counties dinner meeting held at Atwood Yacht Club. 

The Carrollton Warriors unleashed their running game and senior running back Drew DeSimone in their 32-6 win over the Alliance Aviators at Community Field. 

10 YEARS AGO 

From 2015 FPS Files 

Leesville celebrated the completion of the village’s new $2.4 million wastewater treatment plant with a ribbon cutting by Mayor John Traxler, John Hoopingarner and Ronnie Portz. 

Four candidates were seeking the three seats on the Brown Local Board of Education. They included A. Wallace Anderson, Tara Bowe, Chad Browning and Ron Ruegg. 

Maddie Dunlap earned her fifth straight individual NBC title with a first-place finish of 19:33 upon being named NBC Runner of the Year.
