Carrollton wrestlers stay busy over winter break with strong tournament showings

For wrestling fans, winter break means time on the mat.

Carrollton’s wrestling teams stayed busy over the break, competing in four tournaments. The girls competed at the Lady Longhorn Holiday Tournament at Lutheran West on Dec. 27, then traveled to Youngstown Jan. 2 for the Austintown Fitch Girls Tournament.

The boys team went to West Virginia for the Wheeling Park Duals Dec. 27, then returned to Ohio for the Licking Valley Wrestling Invitational Jan. 3.

Girls wrestling

Carrollton placed 20th out of 51 teams at the Lady Longhorn Holiday Tournament with 115 points. Elyria won the team title with 348.5 points, followed by Mentor with 326.5.

Kristen Hawkins led Carrollton with a runner-up finish at 100 pounds. Hawkins earned pins in 0:46 and 1:08, then defeated Oberlin’s Rose Boyer by 16-1 technical fall to advance to the championship match, where she was pinned by Lorain’s Cali Otero.

Jere Palas placed eighth at 140 pounds. Ashly Jasso placed 10th at 145 and finished 4-4. Kameryn DePalmo placed 14th at 135 and went 3-4. Alyssa Detchon placed 15th at 110. Breeanna Arquilla placed 16th at 155. Faith McDaniel placed 21st at 115.

At the Austintown Fitch Girls Tournament, Carrollton again placed 20th, this time with 40 points in a 48-team field. Austintown Fitch won its tournament with 190.5 points. Cleveland Heights finished second with 128.5.

Hawkins finished third at 100 pounds, going 4-1. Arquilla placed eighth at 155. Jasso finished ninth at 145. DePalmo placed 10th at 135. McDaniel placed 16th at 115.

Boys wrestling

Carrollton went 5-3 at the Wheeling Park Duals against teams from Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

The Warriors lost to Peters Township, Pennsylvania, 31-30, and to Cincinnati St. Xavier, 40-39, and fell to Clearfield Area, Pennsylvania, 49-23. Carrollton defeated Claymont’s B team 78-6, host Wheeling Park 41-24, East Liverpool 62-15, Loveland 52-24 and Solon 53-22.

Sawyer Broadwater went 7-1 at 113 pounds, losing 14-11 to East Liverpool’s Kyle Ingram. Ozzy Roybal also went 7-1 at 126, with his only loss to St. Xavier’s Vinny Soloria. John Childs finished 7-1 with his only loss by three points.

Cohen Little went 6-1 at 106. Zander Spilker went 5-1 at 132. Ja’Wayne Richardson and Jaxon Sutton each went 6-2 at 157 and 120, respectively. Wyatt Ridzon finished 5-2 at 285. Jayden Sutton and Isaac Day each went 5-3 at 150 and 144. Darrion DePalmo went 4-3 at 175. Brody Gonda finished 4-4.

At the Licking Valley Wrestling Invitational, Carrollton placed fourth with 219.5 points, edging Steubenville by one point. New Lexington won the team title with 290 points, followed by Martins Ferry (243.5) and Grove City (240).

Broadwater won the title at 113 with a 10-5 decision over Martins Ferry’s Jayce Nixon. Cael Lowdermilk won at 138, defeating Martins Ferry’s Colton Nixon in second tiebreakers. Richardson won at 157, pinning Dover’s Patrick Moran in 0:29.

Little placed second at 106, and Jayden Sutton was second at 150. Gonda placed third at 165. Childs, Easton Russell and Lucas Mitchell each placed fifth, and Jaxon Sutton and Roybal each placed sixth.
