Carrollton football goes on road for first victory
Warriors hold off Wildcats to even record at 1-1
Carrollton took an early lead on the road against Edison and never looked back, topping the Wildcats 16-14 to even its record at 1-1 Aug. 29.
CHS head coach Storm Hill said the team talked about not seizing opportunities and making timely mistakes as the Warriors did in a Week 1 loss to East Liverpool.
“We did a lot less of that this week,” Hill said. “There are still some opportunities we let slip but we’re getting better every single week,.
“I’m proud of our kids for responding. They had a great week at practice and that’s the most I can ask for — just improvement every week and putting their best foot forward.”
The Warriors reached the end zone with 5:53 left in the first quarter when Levi Kiko ran 15 yards for a score. It was the longest of Kiko’s 24 carries on the night for 111 total yards.
Paycen Haven added the extra point, then booted a short field goal that culminated a mistake-filled second quarter and put the visitors ahead 10-0 at halftime.
Edison (1-1) clawed its way back in the third quarter when Brett Hellyer ran in for a touchdown but trailed 10-6 after the PAT failed.
Kiko then ran the Warriors down the field, leading to a touchdown pass from Hunter Allison to Jaden Murphy for a 16-6 advantage.
The Wildcats continued their attack in the fourth quarter when Hellyer again found the end zone, and the 2-point conversion brought them within 16-14, but Carrollton held on for the victory.
In addition to Kiko’s ground yardage, Allison threw for 112 yards. Edison ran for 197 yards on 34 carries and quarterback threw for 136 yards but had two interceptions as Carrollton won the turnover battle 3-1.
The Warriors now travel to Medina County to take on Cloverleaf (1-1), which knocked off LaGrange Keystone 22-6 last week.
“They are going to be a solid squad, well coached,” Hill said. “They look like an aggressive defense. We will have to bring our best game.”
