60 YEARS AGO 

From 1966 FPS Files 

Organizations for 1966 included Carrollton Council, where David Hemming was elected council president, while Russell Barrett was elected chairman of the Carroll County Board of Commissioners, which included Roy Tressel and J. Wilbur Boggs. 

The Eisenhut Frozen Food Locker business and building on the corner of Moody Avenue and Courtview Drive, Carrollton, was sold by John (Hunce) Eisenhut to Mr. and Mrs. Richard George of Route 4, Carrollton, and Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Mesler of Irondale. 

Conotton Valley whipped Midvale 58-40 in holiday high school basketball play. 

50 YEARS AGO 

From 1976 FPS Files 

A new postal rate hike went into effect Jan. 1, 1976, raising first-class mail from 10 cents to 13 cents. 

Otis W. Hagey was re-elected chairman of Carrollton’s Board of Public Affairs, which included William E. Clark and William H. Craig. 

Members of Malvern High School’s boys Hornets basketball team — coached by Dan Dennis — included Steve Campbell, Tom Tokas, Bret Oldham, Jerry Recchio, Chuck Ullom, James Stephens, Don Wood, Brad Strock, Bob Hill, Howdy Miller, Randy Casper and Scott Kettering.

40 YEARS AGO 

From 1986 FPS Files 

The workforce at the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office included a sister-brother duo of the former Karla Walton, a radio dispatcher, and her brother, Daryl, a special deputy, who both completed a 310-hour Police Academy course. They were among the 15 full-time and 25 special deputies. 

Officers of the Carrollton Suburban Garden Club were installed by Mrs. Carl (Ann) Saltsman of the Carrollton Garden Club for 1986. They included Mrs. Paul (Linda) Moore, president; Mrs. Robert (Dianne) Buck, vice president; Mrs. Charles (Beth) Johnston, treasurer; and Mrs. Tony (Laura) Magistro, secretary. 

Minerva’s Gary Chaddock was named the tournament’s most valuable player when the Lions’ wrestling team traveled to the two-day Medina Tournament. 

30 YEARS AGO

The Carroll County Board of Health contracted Dr. Collin Kinsey of Wellsville as the county’s new health commissioner, succeeding Dr. Jon Marshall. 

Carrollton’s new mayor, C. Rodger Barto, was sworn into office by Carroll County Court Judge Charles A. Johnston. 

Carrollton’s girls basketball team scored wins over Tusky Valley, 28-26, and East Liverpool, 58-43, to bring their season record to 7-3. 

20 YEARS AGO

Carroll County Clerk of Courts William “Bill” Wohlwend administered the oath of office to Carrollton councilman-elect Bob Dunlap, who was one of two new council members, along with John Yeager. 

World War II Army buddies Carl Miller of Carrollton and Bernie Holtzman were reunited 60 years later when they met at the Rosedale, Maryland, VFW Post 6506 in 2006 after not having seen each other since their discharge in 1945. 

Chris Carlisle, a 1976 graduate of Carrollton High School, was the subject of a feature story written by Bill Peterson highlighting Carlisle’s sports career, which included being named Ohio Division III Coach of the Year as the golf coach at Johnstown-Monroe High School, where he was a two-sport mentor in both golf and basketball. 

10 YEARS AGO 

From 2016 FPS Files 

Bill Stoneman was sworn in as Carrollton’s new mayor by Carroll County Juvenile and Probate Judge John Campbell, succeeding Frank Leghart. 

The Conotton Valley Board of Education bid farewell to longtime member Phil Gooding, who completed 15 years of service as a member and board president. 

The Malvern Lady Hornets defeated Harrison Central, East Canton and Minerva to improve to 10-2 on the season. Sara Loomis recorded double-doubles in each game — 61 points and 41 rebounds for the Hornets through the three games.
