Tuscarawas Valley Civil War Round Table to feature program on the Hunley
The Tuscarawas Valley Civil War Round Table will meet Thursday, Sept. 11, at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St.
The featured presenter will be John C. Spaziani, who will speak on “The Hunley: The Rest of the Story.”
The H.L. Hunley was the first and only Confederate combat submarine to sink an enemy warship during the Civil War. On Feb. 17, 1864, the nearly 40-foot vessel attacked and sank the USS Housatonic off Charleston Harbor, killing five sailors. The Hunley also sank in the attack, claiming its eight crew members. It was discovered in 1995 and raised in 2000, and today remains on display in North Charleston, South Carolina.
Spaziani, a retired engineer and living historian, has portrayed several Confederate officers and spoken at Civil War venues across the country. He and his wife, Charlene, live in South Carolina.
The Tuscarawas Valley Civil War Round Table works to educate the community about the Civil War, preserve its heritage and honor those who served. For more information, call the Dover Public Library at 330-343-6123.
