New Philadelphia’s girls basketball team keeps on rolling. Wins last week over West Holmes (53-41) and the Linsly School (52-34) stretched the Quakers’ win streak to six games heading into a huge Ohio Cardinal Conference game at home against Ashland on Wednesday.
The teams will meet twice in 11 days, with New Philadelphia traveling to Ashland Jan. 24.That pair of contests and the Quakers’ Jan. 28 game at Wooster likely will determine NP’s outcome in the OCC.
The Quakers headed into the week a game back of Ashland, which was yet to lose a league contest.
New Philadelphia was led against West Holmes by Abbey Sweitzer’s 21-point night. Aubrie Wells added 12 and Keira Mason scored 9. Khloe Sours paced the win over Linsly with 18 points. Wells again scored 12 and Sweitzer added 8.
In other girls basketball happenings:
Claymont girls: The Mustangs continued their winning ways, taking a pair of games from Tusky Central Catholic (48-44 on Jan. 8) and Garaway (51-40 on Jan. 10). Against TCC Ava Edwards scored a career-high 32 points and the Mustangs overcame a 40-31 fourth-quarter deficit to win. Edwards also led the way against Garaway, scoring 27 points. The Mustangs improved to 11-5 overall.

Dover girls: It’s been a tough run for Dover’s girls, who since starting 3-2 had lost eight consecutive games heading into the Tornadoes’ Jan. 14 game at home against Steubenville. Five of their losses are by 4 or fewer points, including four in a five-game stretch. … The Tornadoes’ junior varsity, though, had won four consecutive games, including a 29-0 shutout of John Glenn Jan. 5. … At the lower levels, Dover recently recorded victories at the seventh- (23-12) and eighth- (39-14) grade levels over Massillon. Playing big roles in those games were Rylee Hall, Taylor Tharp, Laynee Barnet and Addy Felton.
How they stand: New Philadelphia was right on the heels of Ashland, which was unbeaten through seven OCC games. The Quakers were 7-1 in the league 12-1 overall. Dover was in sixth place at 2-6 and was 3-10 overall. … In the IVC, Strasburg-Franklin was in first place at 6-0, two games in the loss column clear of Newcomerstown, which was 5-2. Strasburg was 9-2 overall; Newcomerstown was 7-6. Tusky Central Catholic sat seventh at 1-6 in conference play, 1-10 overall. In the south, Tusky Valley was 6-1, one game behind unbeaten Hiland. TV was 9-4 overall, which matched Sandy Valley’s record. SV was second in the league at 4-2, a half-game ahead of Claymont (4-3), which was 10-5 overall. Indian valley, at 1-5 in the IVC, was tied for fifth with Ridgewood and was 3-10 overall.
