Any day is a
good day to start taking control of your diabetes. Ohio State University
Extension and Pomerene Hospital are hosting Dining with Diabetes, a cooking
school and nutrition education program designed for people with diabetes and
their family members or caregivers.
Dining with
Diabetes will be held Mondays and Thursdays from 3-5 p.m. Program dates are Sept. 15, 18, 22 and 25. All classes will be
at the Troyer House, Walnut Hills Retirement Community, 4770 Olde Pump St.,
Walnut Creek.
Anyone with
concerns about diabetes or anyone interested in controlling blood sugar is
encouraged to participate and to bring a family member, friend, caregiver or
other support person. This four-session series will focus on different areas of
nutrition and health at each meeting. Follow along with handouts and take-home
materials and finish the program with a healthy dinner prepared by two registered dietitians.
Cooking demonstrations will help participants learn
healthy techniques to use in their own kitchens. Receive a book of 65-plus recipes
at the end of the series.
The cost of the
program is $50 per student and includes all four classes, educational handouts and carbohydrate-controlled meals that feature a variety of recipes. You are
encouraged to also register a support person to attend with you at a
reduced rate of $25 per person. Classes will be taught by Jackie Kaufman, Pomerene
Hospital registered dietitian; Megan Raber, Pomerene Hospital certified diabetes educator; and Kate Shumaker, OSU Extension educator and registered dietitian.

Cooking with
Kate fall 2025
Do you ever
look at recipes in magazines or online and wonder if they taste as good as they look? Do you get invited to parties and
think, “What can I bring?” Do you dread
the thought of deciding what to make for dinner … again?
Join me, Kate
Shumaker, OSU Extension educator and registered dietitian, at Cooking with
Kate for a fun and tasty time. Watch
new recipes being prepared. See helpful
kitchen gadgets in action. Gain
practical cooking tips and techniques. Best of all, sample all the foods prepared.
What’s on
the menu? Honestly, I’m still
testing recipes. Since we’re heading
into fall and the holiday season, I’m leaning toward more “comfort food” recipes
and dishes with warm flavors. Also, because our series focusing on cooking for one to two was so popular, I’ll include a few
dishes with smaller portions. There are many more recipes to be tested, and the
final menu will have one vegetable dish, one main course and one dessert for
each day … with maybe a bonus or two.
This three-week
program series will be held at the Love Center Community Room, 1291 Massillon
Road (state Route 241) in Millersburg on both Tuesday evenings and Wednesday
mornings. The program will be the same
both times. Program dates/times are
Tuesdays, Sept. 9, 16 and 23 from 6-8 p.m. or Wednesdays, Sept. 10, 17 and 24 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The cost
is $20 per person for the entire series.
To register for
this program, call 330-674-3015, email shumaker.68@osu.edu or stop in
the Holmes County OSU Extension Office at 111 E. Jackson St., Millersburg. Preregistration and prepayment
are requested.
