Hiland defeated Mansfield Christian 5-3 in boys soccer action on Aug. 29.
Noah Troyer scored three goals to lead the Hawks. Roman Tkachuk scored twice while Christian Mullet and Bodie Gertz had an assist. Goalie Chase Coblentz had four saves.
“For a high school soccer game, this was the largest crowd we have played in front of in a long time,” Hiland coach Scott Bodiker said. “The atmosphere was great, and our guys expected to get MC's best shot early in the game. We really fed off that and flipped the script to get three great early goals.
"After that, the game got really chippy, and we had a few things go against us that were a little frustrating, but at the end of the day, we hung in there and got a quality win over a district champ from a year ago in Mansfield Christian, who is a team that I expect to have a good season. They play a very difficult schedule, but they will be there at tournament time again.”
Boys golf
Hiland shot a 340 to finish sixth at the Dover Invitational on Aug. 30.
Jack Mast (82), Andrew Beun (83) and Jesse Conn (84) led the Hawks.
Volleyball
Hiland picked up nonleague wins over Western Reserve Academy (25-20, 25-13) and New Philadelphia (25-21, 25-7) on Aug. 30.
Brianna Mishler (41 assists, four aces), Addi Mast (23 kills, 12 digs), Claire Detweiller (five kills), Olivia Miller (13 digs), Alayna Yoder (eight kills, four blocks) and Sienna Immel (four aces) led the Lady Hawks.
Hiland downed Claymont 25-20, 25-13, 25-17 in an Inter-Valley Conference clash on Aug. 28.
Mast (19 kills, two blocks), Mishler (28 assists), Yoder (eight kills, two blocks), Detweiller (three aces, eight digs) and Miller (four aces, eight digs) paced the Lady Hawks.
Girls soccer
Mansfield Christian beat Hiland 6-3 on Aug. 29.
Chanelle Kellogg scored twice to pace the Lady Hawks. Minka Mullet scored once while Finley Hostetler had an assist. Goalkeeper Hayley Yoder recorded seven saves.
“(We) did some good things against a really talented Mansfield Christian squad,” Hiland coach Conner Lee said. “(I) felt like the scoreline doesn't properly reflect the game, but (I’m) overall happy with the effort. (There is) lots to grow on and learn from this game.”
