The Summer of Ribs: Part 1 of 4
Mountain Man Dave Ellis donates produce to senior center
“The senior center loves Mountain Man, Dave Ellis,” said center Director Tammy Verhovec.
A Freeport resident, Ellis grows a variety of produce at his home. Throughout the summer and fall, he often brings loads of vegetables to give away at the center.
Senior citizens can often find it difficult to get nutritious food as many in the county deal with transportation issues and mobility problems. The senior center partners with local farmers to bring a small market to the center each Tuesday.
Ellis’ free produce usually shows up between markets, giving residents a chance to enjoy healthier options throughout the week.
“He’s been donating to my knowledge since at least 2023, probably longer,” said Verhovec. “Not only does he donate produce in the summers, but last Christmas he donated the senior center, Charlie Brown Christmas trees.”
