Realtor Brandi Ryser has committed to donating part of her commissions each month to the Harrison County Dog Pound and has just reached $1,000 donated this year. Ryser says she loves animals and looks forward to continuing her donations as the year progresses.
According to Dog Warden Cindi Yanez, the dog pound has to pay out of pocket for vetting of their animals, as the county doesn’t cover that cost.“
All monies donated to the HCDP Volunteers are used to provide emergency and preventative veterinary care for the dogs at the pound,” Yanez said. “Brandi’s generous donations are a huge help! The last year and a half has been tough with people surrendering and dumping their dogs. The cost of vetting has skyrocketed.”
Yanez said the cost is between $600 and $800 per dog to provide basic vet care and vaccinations. That amount doesn’t include treatment of any Lyme and/or heartworm-positive dogs.
Recently, the pound stepped in to help the humane society with the animal hoarding case in Jewett.
“We had to double up dogs in kennels to make the space, so it was a rough five days or so,” Yanez said. “We committed to keeping three to four of those dogs, but once the HS found fosters, they took the dogs back, which was okay with us since we needed the space.”
There are always dogs available for adoption through the pound, and Yanez specifically highlighted two who are looking for their forever homes:
Marmaduke is a 3- to 4-year-old Great Dane mix. A little timid, but warms up quickly. He’s good with older kids; he hasn’t met any little children while he’s been with us. Housebroken, up to date on vaccines, and neutered. He’s very sweet and affectionate. He has no idea he isn’t a lap dog.
Petey is a Treeing Walker Coonhound, around 3 years old. He’s good with female dogs but not fond of other males. He’s afraid of little kids but not older kids.
