Ron Carter, who has served as chief of the Jewett Police Department for more than 20 years, announced he will retire from his position effective Jan. 2, 2026.

Carter said serving the village has been an honor and a privilege.

“During my tenure, I was able to upgrade the department with all new equipment, including a brand-new cruiser, with the support of council,” Carter said. “Along with many officers I was fortunate to work with, we cracked down on the narcotics issue and other problems plaguing the village. We seized countless drug items, numerous firearms and conducted multiple drug raids that resulted in felony convictions. We were also able to prompt the cleanup of many unkempt and neglected properties, helping keep our village clean.”

Carter said one of the most rewarding moments of his career occurred in 2009 when he responded to a call involving an infant who was not breathing.

“We were able to perform CPR and revive the child,” he said. “For that, Patrolman Walker and I received the American Red Cross Lifesaving Award.”

He said the department has consistently maintained training standards and that he was proud to serve alongside many dedicated officers. Carter added that he had considered retirement for several years but remained in the position at the request of former Mayor Dwight Busby.

Recent budget cuts, however, led to his decision to retire.

“My department’s hours have been reduced from 70 hours a week to 35,” Carter said. “Knowing this would be impossible for me, or any full-time officer, I have decided now is the appropriate time to step away as the department is being defunded.”

Carter said he was told the reductions stemmed from the failure of a recent police levy. He noted that he has operated the department without a levy since he became chief in 2005.

“I am exceptionally disappointed that the village would want to reduce hours and limit this to a single part-time officer position with no benefits,” he said.

Despite his disappointment, Carter wished the village well and said he hopes a new chief can be hired quickly. He also said he is willing to assist any new hire during the transition.

Jewett Mayor George Baillie presented Carter with a plaque recognizing his service.

“This plaque is presented to Ron Carter for 21 years of outstanding commitment and loyalty to the service of the Village of Jewett,” Baillie said. “Thank you for your many years of service. You definitely made the community a safer place.”

Carter thanked council for the opportunities provided during his tenure and expressed gratitude to former Mayor Dwight Busby, Councilman Rick Meneely, Mayor Brian Cumberworth, Mayor George Baillie and Village Clerk Linda Ager.

Although he is stepping down as Jewett police chief, Carter will continue working as a lieutenant with the Cadiz Police Department.
