ODNR invites Ohioans to start 2026 with First Day Hikes

A First Day Hike will be held at Salt Fork State Park as part of the ODNR Winter Hike Series

ODNR is offering a variety of First Day Hikes to celebrate the start of 2026.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources invites Ohioans to welcome 2026 with adventure, inspiration and a breath of fresh air during its annual First Day Hikes program. The New Year’s Day tradition offers a healthy, energizing way to begin the year, with guided hikes scheduled across the state.

“First Day hikes are a simple but meaningful way to begin the year with clarity, connection and purpose,” ODNR Director Mary Mertz said. “Whether you’re stepping onto a trail for the first time or returning to a favorite path, Ohio’s state parks and nature preserves offer a place to reset and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.”

Guided hikes will take place at 15 Ohio state parks and one state nature preserve, each offering a different experience, from lakeside paths to quiet woodland trails. Naturalists will lead the hikes and share ecological, historical and cultural stories unique to each site.

Each hike is family-friendly and open to all experience levels. Participants will receive a commemorative 2026 Winter Hike sticker while supplies last.

Ohio’s First Day Hikes are part of the nationwide First Day Hikes in America’s State Parks initiative. With more than 1,000 hikes held across all 50 states, the program has encouraged millions over the past three decades to embrace outdoor recreation on the first day of the year.

Hikers are encouraged to dress in layers, protect exposed skin, and bring water and snacks. Participants should let someone know their plans before heading out and visit the ODNR website for winter trail safety tips and details on each hosted hike by searching “First Day Hike” on the events page.

Ohioans can start 2026 on the right foot by joining ODNR Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026. Families and friends are encouraged to lace up their boots and welcome the New Year surrounded by Ohio’s natural beauty.

A local First Day Hike will be held at Salt Fork State Park as part of the ODNR Winter Hike Series.

The hike is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, at Salt Fork State Park, 14755 Cadiz Road, Lore City.

Participants will meet at the Stonehouse Trail parking lot, not the Kennedy Stonehouse Museum, and hike the scenic 1.8-mile trail to the historic Kennedy Stonehouse. Hot chocolate and snacks will be provided at the Stonehouse. The hike is weather dependent.
