Jewett is getting into the holiday spirit and will hold its annual tree lighting Dec. 12.

This year marks the third annual lighting event. Before 2022, the village did not have a regular Christmas gathering.

Organizer Bobbie Prevot reflected on her childhood. “We had a large tree on the corner of Main and Center that was decorated with lights each year. I don’t believe there was an official lighting ceremony,” she said.

That tree was eventually removed by the property owner, ending the tradition.

For the past two years, a new tree lighting was held down the street from the administration building thanks to a resident who allowed a tree to be planted on his property. This year, Jewett Council chose to move the tree to village property. With the old school building demolished and plans progressing for the Conotton Creek Trailhead, officials said the timing made sense.

The lighting will begin at 6 p.m. Coffee, hot chocolate and cookies will be available, and the Jolly Jinglers carolers will perform.

“Everyone gets a caroling book and joins in,” Prevot said.

A new addition to the ceremony this year will be sponsored Christmas trees. Cadiz sets up sponsored wooden snowmen each year in the village square, and Jewett has created its own version with trees.

Large trees were sold for $100 and small trees for $50. Proceeds will support park-related improvements, “including the old school area,” Prevot said. “We’re considering putting in a small park for the west side of town as well as the trailhead.”

Prevot said turnout the past two years has been “pretty good,” and she “just wanted to bring the community together.”

She said she looks forward to another event filled with holiday joy.
