Cadiz mourns longtime police officer Helen Barcroft

Helen Barcroft served as a Cadiz Police Officer for over 30 years. She began as a meter maid in 1978 and became a full officer in 1980.

Over the years, she touched the lives of many in the community," said CPD Lieutenant Ron Carter. “I knew her."

Barcroft retired in 2007 and spent time with her family. She died Sept. 7, surrounded by family. She is survived by six children, 21 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

“Cadiz police is mourning her loss,” Carter said. “She worked her way up the ranks to major. I was fortunate enough to work with Helen. She was a great coworker. I really can’t remember a time she called off work. I don’t know if she ever used her sick days or vacation days. She was here every day.”

Carter described Barcroft as an “old-school officer” who was always in full uniform with hat, tie and every button fastened.

“We’re going to send her off with a full police officer funeral,” Carter said. “There will be an honor guard at the foot and head of her casket for both showings. The Harrison County Sheriff’s Office is assisting so we have enough officers. Sgt. Morgan Knight will  perform the bagpipes. Sgt. Woods and Sgt. Smith will handle the flag folding as they are both military veterans.”

Carter will present the flag to the family to show the department’s gratitude and respect for her service.

“She was a loyal, dedicated police officer, with an exemplary personnel file,” Carter said. “She will be greatly missed. I knew her through my personal life before I became a cop. I grew up around her. She was an all-around great person.”

A plaque will be placed on the Cadiz Police Department fallen officer wall in her honor.

Visitation was at Clark-Kirkland-Barr Funeral Home in Cadiz. The funeral service was Sept. 11 with Paul Giffin officiating. Burial followed at Holly Memorial Gardens in Colerain, Ohio.
