Roscoe Village launches volunteer initiative
New program seeks community support for educational events and visitor experiences in Coshocton County
The Roscoe Village Foundation is launching Roscoe Volunteers, a new community initiative inviting residents to help support educational programs, village events and visitor experiences at Historic Roscoe Village.
The program reflects the foundation’s mission to steward the canal-era values of community and connection that once shaped daily life in the village.
Roscoe Volunteers is part of the foundation’s Elevate the Legacy Initiative, which is strengthening educational programming and community engagement across the historic canal-era district.
Over the next year, the foundation aims to impact the lives of 5,000 children across Ohio through school field trips, homeschool programs and youth learning experiences. Volunteers play a vital role in helping deliver these hands-on educational opportunities.
The most immediate need is for volunteers to assist with spring school field trips and Homeschool Days, which take place March through May. Volunteers help guide students through interactive activities that introduce canal-era life, traditional skills and the work that shaped communities along the Ohio & Erie Canal.
Beyond youth education programs, volunteers contribute across the village in many ways including welcoming visitors, assisting with historic interpretation, supporting festivals and public events, participating in costumed community presence during immersive programs, helping maintain gardens and seasonal décor, and providing behind-the-scenes support for village operations.
Volunteers also play an important role in the village’s signature events including Canal Day in August, the Apple Butter Stirrin’ Festival and Christmas in Canal Town, culminating in the Christmas candlelighting ceremonies.
“Roscoe has always been a place built by people,” said Angel Underwood, marketing and visitor experience specialist for the Roscoe Village Foundation. “Our volunteers help bring the village to life — whether they are helping a child discover canal-era history, welcoming visitors during a festival or sharing the stories that make this place meaningful.”
Beyond supporting programs and events, the Roscoe Volunteers Initiative is designed to cultivate a strong volunteer community. Participants are invited to appreciation gatherings, seasonal celebrations and learning opportunities throughout the year including canal boat outings, receptions and special programs.
Training is provided, and volunteers may participate as their schedules allow.
