Four Carroll County firms were honored at the 11th annual safety awards banquet held at Atwood Lake Lodge. They included Tennessee Gas Pipeline, Carroll County Farm Bureau, Carrollton Standard Printing Co. and the Malvern plant of Diebold Inc.

Howard Showalter, former Carroll County Extension agent, began his duties as area Extension agent in farm management at the Dover Area Extension Center.

Receiving top awards at Conotton Valley High School’s sports banquet were seniors Jim Monigold and John Conner, most valuable players in basketball.

Hale’s General Store in Petersburg, one of the area’s oldest businesses believed to have been built by the Tope family after 1815 when George Tope came to this area, changed ownership when the store was sold by Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hale to Lee Bain and Vera Frisosky, both of the Carrollton area.

Carroll County young farmers and their wives who received awards at the fourth annual Carrollton Young Farmers banquet included Bob Lozier, Mark and Linda Cargill, John Mangun, John Hawk, Sharon Ballard Jenkins, who was named Young Farmer Wife of the Year, and Lee Rummell.

Baseball and track teams at Carrollton High School were entertaining large turnouts, with 30 prospects for the baseball team and the usual number of underclassmen along with upperclassmen for the track team.

The Carroll County Agricultural Society approved a 25-year lease with the Carrollton Exempted Village School District for use of the fairgrounds athletic field for athletic events for a $500 annual fee.

Diane Pontuti, a Carrollton eighth grader, won the Carroll County spelling bee, following her sister, Karen, who won the bee in 1984.

Paul Bortz, president of the Carroll County Farm Bureau, and Donald E. Rutledge, associate editor of The Free Press Standard, were among a group who attended a three-day Farm Bureau trip to Washington, D.C.

Award winners from the Carrollton High School wrestling banquet included Shawn Worley, Mike Chiurco, Kevin Dunlap, Dave Malone, Clyde Plunkett, Eric Sutton and Geoff Warner.

Nita Yeager, who was elected in November 1995, was sworn in as Sherrodsville’s new village clerk.

Four members of Dellroy Boy Scout Troop 144 earned their Eagle Scout rank. They included Josh Andrew, Adam Andrew, Terry Swanson and Mark Albright.

Returning lettermen on the Carrollton girls softball team included Julie Plavka, Tanya Geiser, Kim Wilson, Misha Smolinsky and Karley Anderson.

Students with lead roles in the production of the CHS musical “Anything Goes” included Zac DeNardi, Nate Perry, Abby Podratz, Sarah Husted, Brad Eick, Sara Mangun, Matt Cairns and Bethany Myers.

Officers of the Carroll County Township Trustees and Clerks Association elected for 2006 included Cathy Kinney, president; David Frew, vice president; Susan Logan, treasurer; Deb Meister, clerk; and Evelyn Burrier, executive committee member.

Returning lettermen on the 2006 Carrollton Warrior baseball team included Matt Spears, Kurtis Johnson, Josh Graham and Drew DeSimone.

Returning lettermen on the 2006 Carrollton Warrior girls track team included Maria Miller, Caley Yeager, Amanda Moyer, Kim Olivito, Kalee Eckles, Jareka Henry, Arry Ossler, Jacque Evans, Samantha Reed, Katie Brown, Carrie Frampton, Jen Foster and Nancy Wenner.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Deputy Shane Beohm was presented the Carrollton Civic Club’s Distinguished Service Award for forming and operating a K-9 unit for the Sheriff’s Department.

The dream of new Carrollton schools inched closer with approval by the Board of Education to begin the process of receiving an estimated $10 million from the Ohio School Facilities Commission.

Darla Tipton was sworn in as Carrollton’s clerk-treasurer by Carroll County Probate and Juvenile Court Judge John Campbell.

Returning lettermen for the Carrollton Warriors boys track team included Adam Shaw, Bryce Mohn, Chase Flanagan, Jose Diaz, Cole Lovett, Quinton Huggett, James Fankhouser, Tyler Fox and Brenton Miller.
