Port Washington Village Council addressed ball field concerns, upcoming events and routine business during its April 7 meeting.
Representatives from the baseball league spoke to council about issues with neighbors near the Bates T-ball field. The group discussed raising fencing by 10 feet to block the adjacent residential area. League representative Austin Menefee will obtain pricing and present a quote to council. Council also approved purchasing paint for the concession stand.
Residents Jacquie Price and Jody Boring announced the village farmers market will open June 4 at the Community Center and continue each Thursday from 6-8 p.m. They also shared plans for a plant sale May 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the center.
Price asked council to reconsider a 2025 ordinance banning chickens within village limits and suggested adding restrictions instead. Solicitor Mark Perlaky said he could draft a revised ordinance if council chooses to move forward.
Mayor Thomas Gardner reminded residents that spring cleanup will take place April 17-19, with dumpsters located behind 105 W. Main St. Tires and hazardous waste will not be accepted.
Council approved a $16,800 paving project for Dichler Lane, covering the stretch between Church Street and Glasgow Road.
In safety discussions, council members raised concerns about a recent incident involving students near the baseball field on Arch Street. Officials discussed the possibility of increased patrols, but noted challenges due to a shortage of available law enforcement personnel. Residents were reminded to call 911 to report concerns.
Other reports included street department work such as distributing gravel in alleys and maintaining village properties, as well as a fire department report noting 11 calls in March.
The next council meeting is scheduled for April 21 at 7 p.m.
