Winners announced at 42nd Annual Needle Art Show in Brunswick

Studer and Westfall earn Best of Show honors as crafters showcase skill and creativity across 123 entries

The 42nd Annual Needle Art Show was held Sept. 13-14 at the Brunswick Library, with 123 creations earning ribbons. Of those, eight crafters won multiple ribbons.

Best of Show was awarded to Cathy Studer for her surface embroidery piece By the Sea and to Cheryl Westfall for her crocheted miniature bed scene.

Technical Excellence ribbons went to Jan Figola for her knitted Barn Swallow Fingerless Mitts; Patricia Mills for her embroidered Autumn Leaves Table Set; Julie Murawski for her counted cross-stitched 1776 Liberty Eagle; Mary Simmons for her knitted Vanilla Stripe Socks; and Marianne Vollenweider for her needlepoint Avenue of the Giants.

Judge’s Choice ribbons were presented to Becky Viebrantz for her counted cross-stitch Owl Quaker Ball; Patricia Mills for her embroidered Autumn Leaves Table Set; and Cheryl Westfall for her crocheted miniature bed scene.

Viewers at the show also voted for their favorite entry, with the Viewer’s Choice ribbon awarded to Westfall for her crocheted miniature bed scene.

There were five junior entries (under age 18) receiving ribbons: Sydney Hennis for her counted beginning cross-stitch; Lena White for her counted cross-stitch Bear, Dog, Cat; Peytyn Minter for her crocheted wreath; Whitney Weyrauch for her Basic vest; and Rosemarie Erenpreiss for her needlepoint Butterfly. All junior participants received the guild’s thanks for entering, as well as a Dairy Queen gift card.

Special thanks were extended to the judges. Diane Blinn, a member of ANG, EGA and NAN and past president of the Stan Hywet Needlework Guild, holds certification as a needlework judge through ANG and serves as chairperson of the Master Needlepointer Certification program. Marsha Papay Gomola has taught needlework for EGA, NAN, TNNA, The Sampler Gathering, Christmas in Williamsburg and Callaway Gardens School of Needle Arts. She is an award-winning author for many needle arts magazines and currently serves as president of the Medina EGA chapter, the Day Lilies. Susan O’Mally, a member of EGA, ANG and the Stan Hywet Needlework Guild, serves on its program committee and teaches knitting in yarn shops in Chagrin Falls and Aurora.

Thanks also went to Shelly Hronec, owner of Just Stitching in Strongsville, for her support and loan of display items. Very special recognition was given to show chair Linda Hennis for her dedication to the event’s success.

The Medina Needlework Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from April to December at the Presbyterian Church on Route 18. A “stitch-in” begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by the meeting at 7 p.m., where members often learn new skills. Visitors are welcome.
