Artist Cara Romano to speak at next Medina County Art League meeting
Monthly gathering set for May 18 at Root Candles Community Room
Artist Cara Romano will be the featured speaker at the Medina County Art League meeting at 7 p.m. May 18 in the Root Candles Community Room, 623 W. Liberty St. in Medina.
Guests are welcome to attend the monthly Medina County Art League meetings, which are typically held on the fourth Monday of each month. Organizers encourage attendees to check the league’s website for schedule changes.
Romano, who was born in 1980 in Schenectady, New York, has spent her life creating art. Raised in Oberlin, she developed an early interest in drawing before expanding into sculpture, found-object work, assemblage and installation art while attending the University of Chicago, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in 2002.
While earning her master of fine arts and master’s degree at Ohio University in 2007, Romano began exploring an analog, time-based process of drawing and painting directly from sunlight and the shadows it casts. That process has remained central to her work for the past 20 years.
Her current artwork features colorful abstract compositions in watercolor and ink, often combined with detailed drawings and collage elements. Romano also works in oil painting, jewelry-making and collage and has interests in music, writing and entrepreneurship.
Romano views her artwork as both a spiritual investigation and a reflection of the present moment inspired by light and shadow. Her collage work often references artists from the past, drawing on her background in art history.
She teaches drawing and painting at several universities and art centers throughout Northeast Ohio and serves as director of Gallery East at Cuyahoga Community College. Romano lives in Cleveland and maintains a studio and gallery at Negative Space Gallery. She is also a founding member of Chrysalis Artist Studios.
Those interested in joining the Medina County Art League may do so at any meeting or through the organization’s website, which also includes information about workshops, exhibits and volunteer opportunities.
