Highland girls win Nikki Reynolds Invitational
Buckeye, Medina also post strong showings at late-season meets
Highland’s girls won the Nikki Reynolds Invitational, while Buckeye and Medina also turned in strong performances at multiple late-season track meets.
Highland Athletics
Highland’s girls track team flexed its muscles in a late-season tune-up, winning the Nikki Reynolds Invitational held May 2 at Wooster High School. The 14-school meet also included athletes from Highland, Cloverleaf and Buckeye’s boys teams, as well as Cloverleaf’s girls.
The Hornet girls piled up 107.5 points in their winning effort, easily ahead of runner-up Norwayne. Cloverleaf finished 11th with 23. Highland’s boys placed ninth with 35.5, one spot and 3.5 points ahead of Cloverleaf. Woodridge won with 136. Buckeye, with a limited crew, scored 4.
Highland’s girls were led by a strong day from junior distance standout Katie Schuler, who won the 3200, was on a winning relay and was runner-up in the 1600.
The foursome of juniors Audrey Whitling and Audrey Hartschuh, sophomore Anna Coleman and freshman Scout Marquis won the 4x100. Juniors Celia Pylypiak, Madison Forshey and Schuler, along with freshman Olivia Keough, won the 4x800.
Pylypiak was second in the 300 hurdles. Senior Allison Gryskiewicz, sophomores Bria Riedy and Coleman placed 2-3 in the pole vault.
Junior Andrew Bossart had the best individual finish for Highland’s boys, placing fourth in the 800. He also ran on the 4x400 team with seniors Braden Gryskiewicz and Aleksander Djordjevich and freshman Jordan Gryskiewicz, which placed third.
For Cloverleaf’s girls, the group of senior Kayla Shook, junior Samantha Porter and freshmen Adrian Akers and Lily Dluzynski won the 4x400. Shook also placed third in the 200 and fifth in the 100.
Sophomore Grady Pamer led Cloverleaf’s boys with a runner-up finish in the long jump. Senior Caleb Neville added a third-place finish in the 3200.
Buckeye freshman Joseph Stahl finished fifth in the 800.
Buckeye relays
Buckeye’s track teams came within a couple points of a clean sweep at their own meet April 30. The boys team won with 113 points, topping the 12-team field by 28 points over runner-up Elyria Catholic. The girls totaled 92, just shy of Fairview’s winning total of 94 among 12 scoring teams.
Winners for Buckeye’s boys included Brayden Bennett (100) and Jacob Bally-Freiberg (discus), along with the 4x200, 4x400 and 4x1600 relay teams. For the girls, the Bucks won the 4x100 shuttle hurdles. Madison Gillon (high jump), Ellen Steppenbacker (pole vault) and the 4x800 relay team all finished second.
Berea Relays
Competing in a meet they have attended for years, Medina’s track teams performed well, winning the boys title, placing third in the girls standings and taking the overall championship in the 15-school meet.
Medina’s boys won with 74 points, ahead of Greater Cleveland Conference rivals Mentor (62) and Brunswick (60). The girls scored 60, trailing Aurora (71) and North Royalton (61).
Winners for Medina’s boys included the all-senior 4x400 relay team of Nate Fischer, Liam Meade, Carson Henning and Jackson Riffle, who also placed third in the 100. Fischer, Henning, Meade and senior Logan Jones won the 4x800. Seniors Peyton Davis, Riley Dworznik and Joey D’Aurelio, along with junior Zach Sohar, won the 4x1600.
For the girls, senior Brooke Diello won the 100 and also ran on a pair of winning relay teams, including the sprint medley relay with seniors Ruby Lloyd and Michaela Gwinn and junior Mariana Cunningham.
