Medina volleyball to host Ace for Grace fundraiser Sept. 23
Lady Bees continue tradition of supporting local cancer patients through Mary Grace Memorial Foundation with raffles, spirit wear and rivalry match against Brunswick.
The Medina Lady Bees volleyball program will host the 13th annual Ace for Grace fundraiser Sept. 23, continuing its tradition of supporting local families battling cancer through the Mary Grace Memorial Foundation.
The event, held in the Medina High School gym, will feature freshman, junior varsity and varsity games against county and conference rival Brunswick. Games begin between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m., with tickets available at the door. Fans can also take part in a basket raffle, 50/50 raffle, spirit-wear sales and concessions.
Varsity head coach Jason Schellenberger said the fundraiser began years ago as Volley for the Cure before being renamed in honor of Mary Grace, a Medina resident who died of breast cancer in 2005. The memorial foundation, founded by her family, provides financial assistance to cancer patients and their families in Medina, Stark and Wayne counties.
“This all started as Volley for the Cure many years ago,” Schellenberger said. “But after Mary Grace passed away, a parent came to us with the idea to keep the funds local.”
The event raised just over $10,000 in 2024, a record total. Funds go toward items such as medication co-pays, transportation and bills that insurance does not cover.
Event chair Nikki Campbell said the annual game has become a highlight for the student-athletes and the community.
“Our student-athletes embrace this event as the highlight of the season,” Campbell said. “They look forward to seeing all their hard work come together for a cause greater than athletics. The ladies promote this event as the biggest game of the year and the student section shows up.”
Anyone wearing 2025 Ace for Grace spirit wear will receive free admission; apparel will be available at the door and online at tinyurl.com/aceforgrace. Businesses interested in sponsorships may contact organizers at MedinaAceforGrace@gmail.com.
