Medina volleyball finds momentum; girls soccer climbs to 7-0
Bees also notch strong showings in golf, cross country and boys soccer
Medina’s volleyball began righting its ship a bit after a
rough start that saw the Bees win just one match in their first eight outings.
Back-to-back non-league wins over Lorain and Westlake got the tide headed back
in the right direction, after which am impressive win over Solon and just like
that Medina had quadrupled its win total.
It started against Lorain, a one-off non-league match. The
Bees romped in the first set 25-8, then methodically took the other two, 25-23
and 25-17, as Medina notched its first Greater Cleveland Conference victory of
the season. Senior Olivia Fedor had a stellar match with eight kills and five
aces. Junior Laura Sherman led with 20 assists and senior Leah McKinley checked
in with 16 digs.
Next to fall was Westlake, which the Bees dispatched 25-12,
25-19, getting four kills apiece from seniors Fedor and Kiera Szuter. Senior
Elaina Sabol added four blocks.
In Medina’s other meeting in a tri-match, former GCC and
future Suburban League rival Solon went down 25-20, 25-12. Freshman Kate
Schellenberger delivered 12 kills in the match against Solon. Senior Leah
McKinley led with 12 digs.
The Bees were set to return to action on Monday and Tuesday
this week with meetings with good but smaller Cloverleaf and Shaker Heights, so
that streak may be up to five matches by now with a struggling Brunswick squad
waiting this Tuesday.
Girls golf
Hosting their own invitational at Fox
Meadow Country Club, the Bees shot a solid 366 to finish in 10th
place in a stacked 19-team field that included state powers Magnificat and
Walsh. “Mags” won with a 296, 10 strokes ahead of Walsh. Corrinne Christeon led
the Bees with an 87. Rachel Coleman followed with an 89. Lily Zimmerman shot 91
for Medina, which got a 99 from Marissa Nugent and a 107 from Madison Roose. Highland
senior Elizabeth Coleman was medalist with a stellar 63, matching the county
record in the process.
Cross Country
Medina’s girls finished a strong third
among 11 teams on Saturday in the Boardman Spartan Invitational. The boys squad
checked in sixth out of 13 squads. Alexis Warnement led the girls team with an
11th-place finish. Alanya Yanmaz was two spots behind. Julie
Dietrich finished 16th, while Julie Black placed 19th.
Laila Patilla was the Bees’ other scored, crossing 40th. Joey
D’Aurelio led the boys team with a 15th-place finish. Logan Butsko
finished 29th, one spot ahead of teammate Liam Meade. Trent Schirmer
(48th) and Ethan Antill (50th) rounded out Medina’s scorers.
Soccer
The Bees split a pair of matches last week,
beating Cleveland Heights 5-2 in a Greater Cleveland Conference match (9-9)
before falling to unbeaten Brecksville 2-0 in a non-league meeting of future
Suburban League foes (9-13). That left Medina with a 4-2-1 record. Medina got two
goals and an assists from Brody Gannon to pace the win over Cleveland Heights. …
The girls team stayed unbeaten through seven matches, romping over Cleveland
Heights (10-0) and edging Ontario 2-1. Naomi Sundermeier led the win over
Cleveland Heights with three goals. Emma McTigue and Ella Wilgo both scored
twice. Avery Atkinson had one goal and three assists. Atkinson and McTigue each
netted a goal against Ontario. … In the
MaxPreps state rankings, Medina’s girls were sitting at No. 6 heading into the
week. while the boys team was slotted 11th.
