Medina boys golf clinches seventh straight GCC crown; girls place second
Bees sweep league tournaments as Riedel, Stafford lead on the course; girls tennis caps final GCC season with strong showings ahead of sectionals
Medina’s boys golf team captured its seventh straight Greater Cleveland Conference championship while the girls finished runner-up as both squads advanced to postseason play.

Medina’s boys golf team closed out its time in the Greater Cleveland Conference in championship form, winning its final league tournament and claiming its seventh straight GCC crown.
Freshman standout Trent Riedel shot a 3-over-par 73 to edge senior teammate Cam Stafford for medalist honors at Ravenna’s Windmill Lakes Golf Course. The Bees also got sub-80 rounds from junior Elliot Morgan (78) and Collin King (79), giving Medina a team score of 304 — 17 strokes better than runner-up Brunswick. Declan West shot 82 and Kale Shockley 86 as Medina finished the GCC season 4-for-4 in 18-hole events.
On the girls’ side, Medina solidified second place in the GCC by finishing runner-up in the final conference tournament of the year at Stow’s Fox Den Golf Course. The event was shortened to nine holes due to weather. Brunswick won with a 161, 23 strokes ahead of Medina, which edged Strongsville by four.
The Bees were led by Corrinne Christeon’s 39. Lily Zimmerman and Honor Hlavana each shot 48, Marissa Nugent carded a 51 and Madison Roose finished at 55. The girls ended the GCC season in second overall, with Brunswick scoring 20 points to Medina’s 16.
The girls team began postseason play Monday in the Division I sectional at The Elms Golf Club in Massillon, with results not available before press time. The 21-team field included Highland, Cloverleaf, Wooster, Brunswick and schools from Stark and Summit counties. The top four teams and top four individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to the Tanglewood District tournament set for Tuesday.
The boys team was scheduled for Division I sectional play Tuesday at Good Park Golf Course. The field included recent state champion Hoban, along with Buckeye, Highland, Wadsworth and others. The top four teams and four individuals would advance to the Pine Hills District tournament to be played Monday.
Girls tennis
Medina finished third in its final GCC season. Freshman Emma Morse won the No. 3 singles championship and will be a player to watch next year as the Bees move into the Suburban League National Conference, home to Hudson and Highland.
No. 2 singles player MJ Pimpo finished runner-up, and No. 1 singles player Ashley Wallace placed third. Medina’s No. 1 doubles team of Veronika Janciova and Chase Kremer earned third place, as did the No. 2 doubles pairing of Ella Bresler and Nellie Alber.
The Bees were scheduled to host sectional play this week. District competition will follow Oct. 9 and 11.
