City of Medina prepares for America’s 250th celebration
Yearlong semiquincentennial events begin in January with history programs, exhibits and community activities across Medina
The City of Medina is launching a yearlong America 250 celebration in 2026 with historical programs, exhibits and events highlighting the nation’s semiquincentennial.
America 250
Jan. 1, 2026, marks the official kickoff of the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration, commonly known as America 250. The City of Medina’s America 250 Committee began meeting in August 2024 to plan a yearlong celebration.
Medina is an official community designated by the state of Ohio, meaning all city-sponsored America 250 events will be listed on the state’s website. The city is also using the state’s monthly themes as a guide for local programs and events.
Residents are encouraged to pick up the new 2026 City Event Guide, which includes details on all events planned throughout the year. The guides are available at Medina City Hall and downtown shops, with America 250 events marked by small American flags.
The January theme is Firsts and Originals. On Jan. 10 at 1 p.m., Medina historian Roger Smalley will present a program titled “From Declaration to Our Town’s Founding” in the community room at Medina Library. Smalley will continue the series Jan. 24 at 1 p.m. at the library with a second presentation, “Stories from Early Medina.” Both programs are free and will include visits from historic guests. Seating is limited, and early arrival is encouraged.
Throughout January, Medina TV will also broadcast a two-part series titled Medina: The Early Years on Armstrong Channel 37. Viewers should check local listings for airtimes.
In March, Medina Library will host a traveling exhibit from the First Ladies Museum in Canton titled “The Untold Stories of Ohio’s First Ladies.” The city is also accepting reservations for a luncheon scheduled for March 21 at Williams on the Lake. The luncheon will feature Dr. Mari Halkovich, owner of Vintage Vanities, who will present “Glitz and Glamour in the White House: Ohio’s Presidential First Ladies, Their History, Fashion and Jewelry.”
Registration for the luncheon is available online at medinarec.activityreg.com/selectActivity.
