Wooster school board votes to proceed with May bond issue

At the Dec. 17 meeting, the Wooster City Schools Board of Education approved the second and final resolution to proceed with a May 2025 bond issue.

This decision enables the district to advance its revised Facilities Master Plan, which focuses on constructing a new middle school for sixth grade through eighth grade on the high school campus and aligning school facilities to support the evolving needs of students and Wooster’s population redistribution.

“We have a focused, fiscally responsible plan shaped by extensive family, staff and community input that balances the community’s desire for a reduced financial commitment while addressing our facility needs,” WCS Superintendent Gabe Tudor said.

Key details of the bond issue include a new middle school, with the proposed facility including an athletic field to be built north of Follis Field on the high school campus. The total cost is $67 million.

“Focusing only on constructing a new middle school decreased the total project cost by approximately $35 million from the previous bond request in May 2023,” Tudor said. “This honors the community’s call for a reduced financial commitment while providing modern learning environments that meet evolving educational needs.”

At 3.4 mills, residents will pay $119 a year or approximately $10 monthly per $100,000 of property valuation. The annual cost represents a $115 reduction per $100,000 of property valuation from the previous bond request.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and engaged as the district shares updates through the spring community newsletter, social media and the district website. Visit www.woostercityschools.org/district/content-page/facilities-master-plan for the latest information.
