Sophia Misel, a 10th-grade student at Wooster High School, recently earned accolades from Theatrefolk Inc., a Canadian publishing company with an international presence in k-12 education. The company, known for its specialization in plays and classroom resources for teachers and student performers, selected Misel’s work to be included in a compilation of monologues titled “BIPOC Voices and Perspectives.”
The collection of monologues will be edited by Lindsay Price, vice president of Theatrefolk Inc., whose plays are performed over 1,000 times each year in schools all over the world. Misel submitted two monologues, one comedic and one dramatic, to an all-call from Theatrefolk Inc. in December. Her comedic monologue, titled “Clone Sister,” was selected to be included in the collection, which will be published in both print and electronic formats. Scheduled publication is tentatively set for August 2021.
As a result of her selection, Misel will receive a $100 cash prize, as well as a free copy of the book upon publication. Additionally, she will be given full acknowledgment for authorship of the monologue.
“I am incredibly proud of Sophia for all of the hard work that went into earning this special distinction,” said Kristin Broda, Wooster High School drama teacher. “Theatrefolk Inc. is one of the most well-respected publishing companies in their space, and this award truly shows the talent and creativity that Sophia possesses.”
Wooster High supports a thriving drama and performing arts program. Students grade 9-12 are afforded the opportunity to participate in drama courses as part of their class schedule, as well as an after-school extracurricular activity.
