Jeremy Westbrook has worn many hats during his 25-year career in education — 24 of them at West Holmes Local Schools — but his passion for helping students understand the sciences has remained constant.

Westbrook teaches organic chemistry, physics, College Credit Plus earth science and astronomy at West Holmes High School. He brings a range of experience and enthusiasm to the classroom, shaped by his own well-rounded background.

A graduate of Licking Valley High School and Kentucky Christian University, Westbrook was active as a student, participating in football, basketball, baseball, track, show choir, musicals and his church youth group.

He said his favorite teaching memory was taking students on an astronomy field trip to an observatory.

“(I loved) seeing students get so excited about seeing the planets and galaxies,” Westbrook said.

Westbrook was drawn to teaching by his faith and a love for lifelong learning.

“I felt that God wanted me to, and I loved helping others to learn,” he said.

One surprise in his career has been the impact he’s been able to make, not just with students, but also with colleagues.

For Westbrook, the most rewarding part of his job is seeing his students work hard inside and outside the classroom. When they study hard, are able to comprehend difficult concepts and get excited about their accomplishments, it means the world to him.

Like any career, teaching has its challenges. Westbrook said it’s tough when students show little motivation to learn. Still, he remains committed to his calling.

Outside of school he enjoys sports, playing guitar, running and spending time with his family.
