West Holmes boys, girls cross country teams advance to regionals
Girls finish third at Cambridge District; Knights also see highlights in football, soccer, and middle school play.
The West Holmes girls cross country team advanced to regionals as a team by placing third at the Division III Cambridge District on Oct. 18.
Iriel Mena led the Lady Knights with a fifth-place finish in 19:40. Katherine Kaster placed 10th in 20:28. Alexis Wagers placed 19th in 21:06. Ellie Babitt and Chelsie Cooper placed 39th and 52nd, respectively, to round out the scoring.
Boys cross country
West Holmes advanced to regionals as a team by placing 10th at the Div. III Cambridge District on Oct. 18.
Owen Neville paced WH with a 17th-place finish in 17:55. Owen Mallasch placed 37th in 18:49. Parker Garver placed 61st, Marshall Yoder 71st and Finn McClintock 73rd to round out the scoring.
Football
New Philadelphia picked up a 26-21 win over West Holmes in Ohio Cardinal Conference play on Oct. 17.
Brayden Parsons completed 14 of 21 passes for 162 yards and three touchdowns with an interception to lead the Knights (5-4, 3-3).
Rhett Chaney (six catches, 29 yards), Reid Hoxworth (1-33) and Coi Beachy (1-49) all caught a touchdown pass. Brody Bowman led the rushing attack with 89 yards on 21 carries, adding four catches for 31 yards.
Beachy paced the defense with 12 tackles. Lynn Cline had 11 tackles, Braxton Blake nine, and Oliver Fleming and Chaney six.
Girls soccer
West Holmes’ season came to an end with a 4-2 loss to Philo in a Div. IV district semifinal on Oct. 20.
West Holmes captured a Div. IV sectional title by beating East Liverpool 8-0 in a sectional final on Oct. 15.
Charli Murphy led the Lady Knights with five goals, setting a school record for most goals in a single season. Her second goal of the night broke the previous mark of 45, bringing her season total to 49.
Becca Miller added two goals, while Katherine Kaster contributed a goal and an assist. Breslyn Brown tallied three assists, and Codi Murphy added two assists.
The defensive back line of Bri Poventud, Sierra Allison, Taylin Clark, Emily Ogi, Lilli Brown and Kylie Turpen shut down East Liverpool, not allowing a shot on goal.
Boys soccer
West Holmes’ season came to an end with a 9-1 loss to Maysville in a Div. IV sectional final on Oct. 16.
Garrett Obrst scored the lone goal for the Knights (6-10-2).
Eighth grade football
Triway defeated West Holmes 32-12 on Oct. 16.
Kaidence Thomas rushed for a touchdown, and Easton Clark threw a touchdown pass to Jacoby Rice. Joey Camacho recovered a fumble to lead the defense.
Seventh grade football
West Holmes rolled to a 28-0 win over Triway in two quarters on Oct. 16.
Zaylin McVay rushed for two touchdowns, tossed a touchdown pass to Zayden Rochester and returned an interception for a touchdown to lead the Knights. Kolston Wagers had a two-point conversion run.
