Wayne County Commissioner Dave McMillen, a former teacher, is an advocate for education and community engagement. He actively participates in initiatives that promote literacy, learning and civic involvement.
Recently, McMillen visited the Ida Sue School to celebrate Right to Read Week during National County Government Month with a storytime event. McMillen read aloud “The Marvelous Adventures of Countyland,” a book about the inner workings of local government, to students and staff.
The book, published using artificial intelligence by the National Association of Counties, is geared toward students and breaks down various county officials’ roles.
“As a former teacher, I support educational initiatives that enrich students’ learning experiences and strengthen community ties,” he said. “Participating in events like this demonstrates how government officials can engage directly with schools to promote a love of learning.”
McMillen has built on his role as commissioner by developing a relationship with the Ida Sue School and becoming a partner with the NEXT Steps Program, designed to allow people with developmental disabilities to enter the workforce and achieve their potential.
