United Way launches Project SNAP GAP to aid families during food benefit delays

Wayne and Holmes Counties initiative mobilizes donations, volunteers and local partnerships to fill basic needs as SNAP payments are postponed

Starting Nov. 1, SNAP benefits for millions of Americans will be delayed, and United Way of Wayne & Holmes Counties is launching a new emergency effort to help families affected by the gap.

The initiative, called Project SNAP GAP, is a community-powered response designed to address increased local needs expected to follow the delay. United Way officials said the effort is about more than food or diapers. It also aims to reduce stress on families, ease the strain on local agencies and businesses, and meet rising demand for basic needs such as meals and mental health support.

Project SNAP GAP will focus on funding local food programs, promoting food donations and special discounts, and supporting volunteers at food banks and pantries.

Local pantries and food banks are encouraged to share their most-needed items, volunteer opportunities and hours of operation. Restaurants and businesses can participate by offering discounts, specials or ideas for collaboration.

Donations are tax-deductible and directly help feed families in the community. Contributions can be made online at secure.givelively.org/donate/united-way-of-wayne-and-holmes-counties-inc/2025-project-snap-gap, by texting SNAPGAP to 44321 or by mailing donations to United Way Wayne & Holmes Counties, 215 S. Market St., Wooster, OH 44691.

Residents who want to volunteer or donate supplies — or who need food assistance — can call 2-1-1 or visit uwwh.org/get-help for a list of local food resources.
