Megan Ross became a teacher because she wanted to give students a comfortable place to learn and grow.
“I originally wanted to be an algebra teacher, but I quickly realized that I had a passion for using literature as a platform for students to develop their own independent thoughts about the world around them,” said Ross, who teaches 11th-grade English at West Holmes High School.
Ross hoped she would impact her students when she began her teaching career. What she didn’t realize was how much they would affect her.
“I started teaching fresh out of college, and I have since gotten married and have two children of my own,” she said. “I feel that my rapport with students has helped me see what is truly important in life, especially in my faith and motherhood journeys.”
One of Ross’ favorite teaching memories at West Holmes was when she had a Tony Awards party after her class read Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” with the Class of 2024.
“We had so much fun with the red carpet, speeches and trophies,” she said.
The most rewarding part of her job is getting to know high school kids and watching them transition into adulthood.
“I love hearing from and running into former students,” Ross said.
Staying updated on the ever-evolving teaching landscape is the most challenging part of her job.
“Teachers are always updating and tweaking our craft and curriculum to best prepare our students for jobs that are being created as we speak,” she said. “It is a huge responsibility for us to stay current.”
Ross participated in marching band, wind ensemble and Drama Club as a student.
She loves making memories with her husband and two children when she’s not teaching.
“We enjoy outdoor activities such as boating and swimming together,” she said. “I am also a fan of shopping, cooking and reading.”
