Sugarcreek Village Council appoints Shetler to fire leadership role

Upon Mayor Walt Wilson’s recommendation, Sugarcreek Village Council agreed to appoint Cody Shetler as assistant fire chief at the Aug. 18 council meeting.

Sugarcreek Fire Chief John Meek said Shetler has been a member of the Sugarcreek Fire Department for nine years.

Council set trick or treat in the village for Saturday, Oct. 25 from 3-5 p.m. Children should be accompanied by an adult.

Council also did the following:

—Held a committee meeting concerning proposed renovations at the fire station. The engineer’s drawings were viewed and discussed. The project is ongoing.

—Heard from Meek about the fire department’s plans to revamp a utility truck by adding a bed and skid unit and disposing of a 2001 brush truck that’s no longer used.

—Work has resumed on the Maple Street project. Crews are currently working at Maple and Church streets.

—Recommended the village seek a different engineer for some village projects. Council agreed.

—Held a brief discussion about the new Skyline Meadows School that is scheduled to be constructed and the installation of a sewer line. Skyline school officials are waiting to receive information from Skyline Homes about the proposed sewer line installation.

—Approved the purchase of primary side arms (pistols) for the police department at a cost of $11,000. The current model has some failure issues and can accidentally discharge.

—Heard the first reading of a resolution accepting the amounts and rates as determined by the budget commission and authorizing the necessary tax levies and certifying them to the county auditor.

—Thanked Weaver Company for sponsoring the fireworks in the village on Aug. 16.

Other information

The finance, personnel and audit committee will meet Sept. 8 at 6:30 p.m.

The next council meeting will be held Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. at 410 S. Broadway in Sugarcreek. The meeting was changed due to Labor Day on Sept. 1.
