The Sugarcreek Safety Committee, at the March 3 meeting, recommended Dr. Kevin Miller as the medical director for the village. Council member Sam Beachy moved to create the position of medical director and to appoint Miller to the position as a volunteer. Council approved the recommendation.
In other matters
Council member Mick Fanning recommended the bandstand at Winklepleck Grove be removed as it is considered unsafe. The cost to make repairs would be about $53,000 based on a quote received in 2023. Council agreed to have the street department tear down the bandstand and firefighters do a controlled burn of materials. The site will be cleared of debris, and grass will be planted.
The Shanesville Lutheran Church officials had requested a handicapped parking place on Ohio 93; however, there is a place for parking, but it is not level. Church officials will be contacted to see if that parking spot is acceptable.
“Members of the church are welcome to use the Hamsher Insurance parking lot on Sundays that is across from the church but on level ground,” council member Jason Hamsher said.
Council also did the following:
—Learned the water department expansion scheduled to begin March 3 will be delayed two to three weeks due to the weather.
—Heard the Garaway School has selected the colors for the cement at the pickleball courts. The acrylic will be applied when the temperature is 60 F or above.
—Heard the parking lot light at 129 Factory St. is not working. Village Administrator Kevin Kaser said the village lift truck is being repaired. Council recommended renting a lift truck to complete several projects. The injection patcher is not working due to material not being drained last year.
—Learned a traffic accident at the east end of the village damaged the guardrail. The guardrail will be replaced at a cost of $14,625. Information will be sent to the insurance company for reimbursement.
—Held the second reading of an amended ordinance, passed Nov. 4, 2024, adopting the International Property Maintenance Code.
—Passed a resolution allowing the village to sell unneeded, obsolete or personal property by internet auction during 2025.
—Reported the village engineer has not reported to the village officials concerning a lift station at Skyline for the construction of a new schoolhouse and tying into the lift station.
—Heard the new ambulance for the fire department is expected to arrive in April. The old ambulance will be sold.
Other information
The fire department will hold a chicken barbecue and auction on Friday, April 11 at 4 p.m. at the Legacy School, 2772 Simons Drive NW, Sugarcreek. Meals are by donation.
Fire Chief John Meek reported over 400 spaghetti dinners were sold at a recent fundraiser.
Council recognized the Garaway basketball team for its success and the wrestling program with 12 wrestlers participating in the district and five at state.
Boy Scout Troop #91 attended the meeting to observe the proceedings.
