The Holmes County District Public Library is gearing up for a busy month of events and programs this May, offering something for all ages.
The library’s 2025 Summer Reading Program, Color Our World, will run May 23 through July 19. Readers of all ages are invited to participate for the chance to win prizes. Registration for the program will begin May 23 at the Holmes Central Library and the East Branch Library.
The library will host a Summer Reading Kickoff at the Holmes Central Library on Friday, May 23 from 4-6 p.m. Attendees can sign up for the Summer Reading Program and help decorate the SRP banner at the art activity paint station.
Activities include an animal show presented by Leaping Lizards, caricature drawings by Greg, a bounce house and an opportunity to read to a therapy dog. Several local agencies will be on-site providing activities and information including Help Me Grow, the Holmes County Health Department, United Way, COAD, the Mental Health and Recovery Board, One-Eighty, Cardinal Rehab, Holmes County WIC, East Central Ohio Treatment Foster Home Program, and the Holmes County Board of Developmental Disabilities, which will offer a Mobile Sensory Area.
The library will host a Sign Language Class on Tuesday, May 6 at 5:30 p.m. at the Holmes Central Library. Jessica and Sharon from the Holmes County Board of Developmental Disabilities will help participants build their American Sign Language vocabulary and communication skills. The class is open to all ages, but registration is required.
At the East Branch Library, Storytime will take place Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. on May 7, 14 and 21 for children age 2-5 with an adult.
Throughout May children can attend Storytime at the Holmes Central Library on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. on May 9, 16 and 30. Kids age 2-5, accompanied by an adult, will engage with stories, songs and rhymes. Immediately following Storytime, the Little Learners Playgroup will meet from 11 a.m. to noon on the same Fridays, offering children up to age 5 activities to promote reading and social skills, with snacks provided.
On Saturday, May 10, kids can participate in Paws to Read at the Holmes Central Library from 11 a.m. to noon, reading to a certified therapy dog from Caring Therapy Canines.
Kids in kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to a Kids Craft Night featuring optical illusions on Tuesday, May 13 at 5:30 p.m. at the Holmes Central Library. Participants will create four “eye-tricking” optical illusion crafts. Registration is required.
On Monday, May 19 from 4-5 p.m., the Holmes Central Library will host After School Fun for kids in kindergarten through sixth grade. Activities will include board games, crafts and snacks.
Adult readers are invited to two book discussions on Tuesday, May 27 at the Holmes Central Library. At 1 p.m. participants will discuss “James” by Percival Everett, and at 6 p.m. the group will discuss “Framed” by John Grisham and Jim McCloskey.
Teens and tweens can unleash their creativity at Art Buffet on Thursday, May 29 at the Holmes Central Library. From 1-3 p.m. attendees can explore a variety of projects including wood burning, leather stamping, bracelet making, perler bead crafts and a grab bag station.
