Summer is just around the corner, and so is the third annual Marching into Summer Festival fundraiser for the Dover High School Marching Tornadoes. The event will be June 7 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Dover Middle School parking lot.

Jamie and Steve Scott are co-chairing the event for the first time. They have a personal reason for getting involved this year.

“Our daughter Ashtyn, who is a freshman this year, plays clarinet in the marching band,” Jamie Scott said. “She just tried out for majorette and was selected, so she will be marching as a majorette next year.”

The couple’s other daughter Taylor also is musically inclined, playing violin in the orchestra.

The Scotts said the three-hour event will be packed with music, activities, food, games and raffles. Dover’s jazz band will entertain the crowd at 11:30 a.m., followed by the steel drum band at 12:15 p.m.

“There will be limited seating for those who want to attend the band performances, so we recommend bringing along a chair,” Steve Scott said.

Those who want to test their carnival game skills can do so at a number of free game stations. Attendees also can try to dunk Band Directors Christopher Redd and Micah Carrick, as well as drum major Zander Ady.

Other activities include free face painting by the cheerleaders and a meet and greet with the majorettes, who will spin and sell cotton candy. Caricatures by Greg Scott and the Dover Public Library also will take place at the event.

The event raises funds for the bands, so there will be plenty of raffle items and a silent auction. Raffle baskets donated by local businesses include the following:

—Tickets to the Columbus Air Show.

—A $75 Lacey PAC gift card, good toward summer camp or tumbling, cheer or dance classes.

—Two $50 gift cards from Shenanigans.

—A two-night stay at the Lady of the Lake vacation home at Atwood Lake along with a basket filled with Breitenbach wine, stemless wine glasses and other items.

—A Dave & Buster’s Fun Basket.

—Four tickets to see the Akron RubberDucks.

—An overnight stay at the Wallhouse Hotel in Walnut Creek and two rounds of golf at Country Acres Mini Golf.

—A free one-year youth membership to the Tuscarawas County YMCA.

Silent auction items have not yet been announced but will be posted on the Marching into Summer Festival Facebook page.

Cow pie bingo returns

The event will include a cow pie bingo contest, during which one lucky person will win $1,000 if the cow does its business in their 3-by-3-foot square on the grid. At noon the participating bovine will be led into the field, and the waiting begins.

Squares are $20 each and can be purchased the day of the event.

Food vendors that will be on-site include Retro Espresso, Boone Creek Wood Fired Pizza, Boba T-Licious Tea, Black Sheep Salads and Smoosh Custom Ice Cream Cookie Sandwiches.

Why the bands need support

Fundraising events help the bands — and band students — in a number of ways including purchasing instruments and music, buying other musical supplies, and helping students represent Dover in parades and events around the country.

“They travel to Disney every four years,” Jamie Scott said.

Steve Scott said the band also is in need of a new band truck.

The Marching into Summer Festival will be held rain or shine. Visit Marching into Summer Festival on Facebook or call the school office at 330-364-7134.
