Purple is the color of royalty. Lavender is the color of the unofficial kickoff of area summer events in and around Wayne County. Lavender Trails’ pair of Lavender Fests, the first on June 29, will put in motion a list of family activities throughout the summer and into the fall.

Food, fun and fireworks will highlight the rest of the summer, with near-weekly activities throughout the region. All the basics will go on including food vendors and games for kids. A little culture and history will be on hand as well for those seeking it.

And so begins the schedule of summer-in-earnest season.

Throughout the summer, as events approach, The Bargain Hunter will feature various upcoming events, highlighting the various activities and goodies each one features.

Those could include, among other things, looks at the Orrville Fire in the Sky softball tournament, fair and fireworks; Apple Creek’s Johnny Appleseed Festival and Sonnenberg Homecoming; and Smithville’s Pioneer Family Activity Day, Native American Day at Pioneer Village, and Harvest Fest and Market at Pioneer Village.

—Fire in the Sky, Orrville, July 1-5: Put on by the Orrville Firefighters Association, this annual softball event, which features a parade, fireworks, street fair and fireworks display, has become as big as any event around and has something for all ages. —Johnny Appleseed Festival, July 25-26: Where better to celebrate America’s most famous apple-centric folk hero than Apple Creek? This two-day event will kick off with a parade and include a meat raffle and a visit from kids entertainer Dr. Dave, among many other things.

—Sonnenberg Homecoming, Aug. 9: Also known as the Sonnenberg Village Festival, this event celebrates the history, culture and founding fathers of the Sonnenberg Village, settled more than two centuries ago. The event is brought to you by the Kidron Historical Society. It has in the past included artisans, food trucks, wagon rides and performances.

—Pioneer Family Activity Day, Aug. 17: From 1:30-4 p.m. Smithville’s Pioneer Village will open up to people wanting hands-on pioneer-era activities and demonstrations, along with food, beverages and music, good for all ages.

—Harvest Fest and Market at Pioneer Village, Oct. 11: The last of the village’s events will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and offer a look at apple butter making and corn grinding. It will include food, vendors, music and more.

Beyond those, keep your eye out for fall- and Halloween-themed activities, followed later by lists of holiday light festivals and other year-end goings-on.
