Hello, readers! My name is Dakotah Ringwalt, and this summer
I have had the incredible opportunity to intern at Ohio State University Extension in Holmes County. As a 2023 graduate of West Holmes High School and an upcoming
junior studying animal science at OSU, I never imagined extension would be part of my journey,
but I am beyond grateful that it is.
This internship has broadened my perspective in ways I could
not have imagined. I was able to engage meaningfully with all three program areas within the extension office, each offering rich learning experiences and real-world applications.
As a lifelong 4-H member and FFA participant, 4-H youth development
was something I was extremely excited to get to help with. I helped with the
Bottle Rocket Extravaganza at elementary schools, and seeing kids jump in excitement when
their rockets launched was truly so exciting. At 4-H Camp, I helped lead a session on animal
skins, skulls and tracks, and I created and taught my own session on polymers. Although I have aged
out of the youth programs, helping with life skills and livestock judging made me feel
as though I had never really left.
Instead, I felt myself begin the transition into a mentoring
role, one I hope will continue to grow throughout the years to come.
On the family and consumer sciences side, Kids in the Kitchen
became a highlight. Being a table leader, guiding kids as they learned how to make new foods,
gave me a new appreciation for teaching and mentorship. I thoroughly enjoyed my time
helping with this program.
Agriculture and natural resources was the area I knew the
least about but quickly became one of the most fascinating. I attended a Holmes County Farm Bureau
meeting, visited a local farm and attended a state horse skillathon planning meeting. I
also had the opportunity to write and record radio spots about Ohio State Extension and
agriculture.
This summer did not feel like work. I have learned so much
in just a few months, and I am genuinely grateful for every moment. The educators and office
coordinators welcomed me with open arms, and their warmth and support made each day feel
special.
To anyone who is struggling with trying to figure out what they want to do, take the leap and try something new. You never know what you will like or not like
until you try it. Take the opportunities when they come to you and do not be afraid to
try new things.
If you have any questions about the programming I have
mentioned or have questions in general, I encourage you to reach out to the OSU Holmes
County Extension Office!
