If Lake’s loss to Jackson on the football field wasn’t painful enough, the Polar Bears dealt another blow by edging the Lake girls golf team by a single stroke at the Division I Girls Northeast District Sectional Tournament, held Sept. 29 at The Elms Country Club.
In a 20-team field where the top four advanced, Jackson took the final qualifying spot with a score of 352, while Lake finished just behind at 353.
Still, there was good news for the Blue Streaks — two golfers advanced individually. Freshman Audrey Goebelt shot a 78, tying for fifth overall and earning the highest individual qualifying spot. Sophomore Charlie Brophy also advanced with an 84, tying for 13th. Junior Elizabeth King (94) and senior Olivia Gant (97) rounded out Lake’s scoring.
The Lake boys also narrowly missed advancing as a team, placing sixth at the Division I Boys Northeast District Sectional Tournament Sept. 30 at Tannehauf Country Club, five strokes short of the final qualifying position. Sophomore Peyton Putnam earned an individual district berth with a 77, good for fifth overall. Junior James Yoder and senior Braylan Sommers each shot 81, while junior Tyler Yannuzzo added an 85 for a team total of 324.
Volleyball
Lake volleyball’s Senior Night was a celebration of its 10-member senior class — and the Blue Streaks marked the occasion with a 3-0 sweep over McKinley (25-16, 25-22, 25-17) in Federal League play.
Senior Peyton Fritz led with 12 kills, while junior Ayla Filisky followed with 11. Senior Violet Seaman tallied 10 service points and four aces, and senior Sydney Hedrick matched her 10 points with three aces and 20 assists.
Seniors Kyleigh Roembke and Emily Eakin each logged three blocks, Isabella Kurtz added two, and defensively, Olivia Nehlen notched 10 digs with injured senior Luci Haddad contributing eight.
The Blue Streaks then fell 3-0 to Perry (25-20, 25-17, 25-19) in another Federal League match. With the loss, Lake stands at 10-9 overall and 5-6 in league play.
Girls Soccer
The Lake girls soccer team rolled past McKinley on Oct. 1, jumping to a 5-0 halftime lead and cruising to a 9-0 victory.
Kyla Brinton recorded a hat trick, while April Fockler scored twice. Claire Ford, Mackenzie Orum, Hope Dobney, and Anaïs Gerbetz also netted goals. Ford and Gerbetz each tallied two assists, while Alina Patel, Dobney, and Fockler each added one. Goalkeeper Hailey Cooper earned the shutout as Lake improved to 9-6 overall and 1-4 in the Federal League.
Boys Soccer
The Blue Streaks boys soccer team picked up its first win of the season and added a draw. Lake defeated McKinley 2-0 on Sept. 30, with goals from Aldo Angel Jimenez and Shane Grisan. Jimenez also had an assist, and Angel Montelongo recorded the shutout in goal.
Lake then battled Nordonia to a 2-2 tie in a nonconference match. The Blue Streaks stand at 1-11-2 overall and 1-4 in league play.
