The 91st Scio Summer Fest officially opened Aug. 21 with remarks from community leaders and festival organizers, continuing a tradition that began in 1934.

“We at the Harrison County Regional Chamber of Commerce want to thank everyone who has come out to this beautiful and annual event,” said Executive Director Milo Baker. “This is our first opportunity to assist in the opening to the Summer Fest, and we consider it a pleasure to be part of this very special day.”

Baker was joined by chamber officers Joyce Klingler and Nan Mattern, along with Fest Chairman J.T. Thompson and Secretary-Treasurer Cindy Francis, for the opening ceremony.

Thompson reflected on the festival’s origins and its role in the community. “The first Festival took place in 1934,” he said. “Later on, during the 1930s, the American Legion joined in on the preparation of the festivities.”

He also highlighted this year’s events, including the 40th Scio Scramble, which drew runners from New York, Pennsylvania, Weirton, Athens and Marietta. “That is a very good showing for our Fest,” he said.

Thompson thanked the community for its support. “I want to thank the people of Scio for their participation in the many ways of assisting and sacrificing to make this year’s Fest the success we are now experiencing,” he said. “As you know, there is not a lot happening in Scio during the year, and this Fest is a very welcomed event. Though this year’s parade is not attended as well as in the past, it will feature participation by many of our loyal supporters.”
