Lady Huskies fall to Bellaire, 60–37
Coach Chace Smith said a lack of intensity contributed to the outcome
Following a loss to Edison Wednesday, the Lady Huskies traveled to Bellaire to take on the Lady Big Reds. The contest closely resembled the Edison matchup, with Harrison Central suffering another lopsided defeat. Youth continues to play a significant role for the Huskies, though the team’s effort suggests growth will come with time.
The Huskies dropped the contest 60–37. Coach Chace Smith said a lack of intensity contributed to the outcome.
“We came out with a lack of intensity and a lack of effort that I expect is because we are young,” Smith said. “Starting two sophomores and a freshman, and having two freshmen off the bench, shows just how young we are. We are going to have highs and lows and that will be understandable. We have some girls that are struggling and just didn’t have the effort and intensity you have to have when you come to Bellaire against any Bellaire team, no matter who they have.”
The Lady Big Reds led 22–11 after the first quarter and never looked back. They went into halftime ahead 34–16 and took a 43–27 lead into the final frame before adding 17 more points in the fourth.
“We had a long talk at halftime,” Smith said. “I will say that we had six to eight girls that understood the concept of intensity and effort and the level of awareness that we need. They finished the game that way.”
“I’m not sure how many we will win or lose this year, but I have to get through to them what it takes to succeed at this level,” he said. “Some are starting to get it, and some are not. It’s going to be some highs and lows. That was my goal in the second half — for them to understand what we have to do the rest of the season.”
Emily Cope and Mik Pelegreen led the Huskies with eight and six points, respectively. Three-pointers came from Shayla Nameth, who hit three, and one each from Pelegreen and Bailey Smith. The loss drops Harrison Central to 2–2 on the season.
Aubree Hines led Bellaire with a 25-point performance. The Lady Big Reds improved to 3–0.
