The weather was a game changer this week for Husky softball.

The week began at Wintersville, where the game was suspended after two innings because of the cold. Wednesday proved to be a better day for softball as the Huskies and Redskins completed the March 23 suspended game and then played the second game of a home-and-home series. Cold weather Friday caused the postponement of the girls scheduled game against Brooke.

The frigid temperatures Monday afternoon did nothing to cool off the Husky offense. The Lady Dogs scored 11 runs in the first inning, led by RBIs from Denali Stull, 2; Kam Crothers, 2; Jaylin Ward, 1; Kara Blackburn, 2; Lillian Thomas, 1; Mikayla Pelegreen, 1; and Bailey Smith, 1. Another Husky run scored on a Redskin error. Thomas added another RBI in the second inning, making the score 12-0 after two innings, when the contest was suspended because of the cold.

The game resumed Wednesday, March 25 in Cadiz on the Huskies’ home field. Mikayla Pelegreen hit an inside-the-park home run and drove in two more runs. Crothers and Maddie Johnson each had an RBI in the fourth inning. Indian Creek scored a single run in the bottom of the third inning, completing the scoring in a 16-1 Husky victory.

Harrison Central recorded 16 hits compared with four for Indian Creek. Creek was charged with three errors. The Huskies played flawless defense with no errors. Pelegreen earned the win in the circle. She struck out seven and walked two.

Central’s bats maintained a blistering pace in the second, regularly scheduled game. Central opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning on a wild pitch. Jaylin Ward singled to drive in two runs. Kara Blackburn’s solo inside-the-park home run in the third added another run. The Huskies’ two runs in the fourth inning came on hits by Lillian Thomas and Denali Stull. Ward’s RBI in the fifth inning and Maddie Johnson’s RBI in the sixth concluded the Husky scoring in an 8-0 victory.

Pelegreen got the start and struck out nine Redskins over six innings. Johnson finished the game and recorded one strikeout in the seventh.
