Legal advocate Danielle Manbeck appeared before the Harrison County Board of Commissioners at its April 1 meeting to seek recognition of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
The annual observance is marking its 25th anniversary after beginning in 2001. It continues to raise awareness and promote efforts to prevent sexual violence.
Manbeck announced several events connected to the observance, including the Tri-County Help Center and Harrison County Dog Pound Chalk the Walk for PAWsitive Impact, which will be held April 25 at 11 a.m. at Sally Buffalo Park in Cadiz.
Manbeck said the “What Were You Wearing?” mannequin display will be shown at the St. Clairsville Area Chamber of Commerce, Vintage Fitness in Cadiz, the Generations Complex in Woodsfield and Monroe County Job and Family Services. She also noted April 7 is National Wear Teal Day, with teal serving as the color of sexual assault prevention.
She said survivor book recommendations are available at the Bellaire Public Library, St. Clairsville Public Library, Puskarich Public Library and Monroe County District Library.
Commissioner Dustin Corder read the proclamation, which commissioners approved unanimously.
The proclamation notes the importance of education, awareness, accountability and community involvement in building a culture that does not tolerate sexual violence.
In 2025, Tri-County Help Center Inc. provided advocacy 2,116 times to 103 survivors including 22 hospital accompaniments and counseling for 229 survivors, demonstrating its continued commitment to supporting survivors.
