Harrison Central soccer teams play in cancer benefit
Annual 'Together We Care' event draws teams to Steubenville
The annual “Together We Care” event, featuring area high school boys and girls soccer teams to benefit local cancer patients, was held recently at Harding Stadium. This year Harrison Central, Indian Creek, Steubenville Catholic Central, Edison and Steubenville competed to raise funds for The Cancer Dietary Initiative.
The Harrison Central girls took on Catholic Central, while the Harrison Central boys competed against Edison. Each year ,teams select offensive and defensive players of the game as everyone comes together to “kick” cancer. Several schools, including Harrison Central, have made this an annual event.
The Cancer Dietary Initiative was founded when Dr. Pervaiz Rahman noticed patients losing weight and seeming more malnourished. This was when it came to light that some patients were choosing between paying bills and eating nutritional food. Together with his son, Haris Rahman, they started a pilot food bank to meet the needs of Dr. Rahman's patients. The CDI is dependent on donations, fundraisers and grants from local individuals, businesses and volunteers.
Raffles and a food drive were held to benefit area cancer patients in need.
Teagan Parks and Lillianne Smith from the girls team and Cooper Thompson and Ben Giffin from the boys earned the honors for Harrison Central.
