Chuck Ellis seeks Coshocton commissioner role
Armed standoff ends safely with suspect in custody
The suspect was identified as Justin M. Stapp
On Nov. 26, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Tappan Scio Road address in an attempt to locate a wanted individual. The suspect, identified as Justin M. Stapp, a resident of Belmont County, was reportedly hiding in the Scio area.
Upon arrival, deputies encountered Stapp inside a mobile home. During the incident, he brandished and discharged a firearm. Law enforcement immediately secured the area and implemented safety protocols to protect nearby residents.
Multiple agencies assisted, including the Belmont County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol and St. Clairsville Police Department.
After an extended negotiation period, the standoff ended without injury to law enforcement personnel or civilians. Stapp was taken into custody and transported to the Harrison County Jail for processing. Charges are pending and will be announced following consultation with the Harrison County Prosecutor’s Office.
Sheriff Mark Touville said he was grateful for the outcome.
“I am extremely proud of the professionalism and restraint shown by our deputies and assisting agencies. Their quick actions ensured the safety of our community during a dangerous situation,” Touville said. “Thanks to their coordinated efforts and dedication, this situation was resolved safely, and I am thankful that no one was injured.”
The investigation remains ongoing. Further details will be released as they become available.
