Mini Queen spreads joy through ‘Wild Duck Hunt’ kindness project

Hometown Hearts Mini Queen Flora Dorsey is using her title to spread kindness and joy.

“I like being a princess and giving back to people,” said the 5-year-old kindergartner at Sacred Heart Elementary School.

The Hometown Hearts pageant focuses on community service. One of Dorsey’s projects is hiding plastic ducks around town with a card including a Bible verse.

“She’s been obsessed with ducks since she was able to quack,” Her mom Coya Dorsey said.

Together they have hidden different-colored ducks in Warsaw, West Lafayette and Coshocton. There were 20 placed in each community with a rare one for all three. Some of the ducks come with special surprises like a tumbler, gift cards to local restaurants or snacks.

“If we get some more sponsors, we’d like to branch out to more communities in Coshocton County,” Coya Dorsey said.

There is a QR code to link found ducks back to the Wild Duck Hunt Facebook page, where people are encouraged to post pictures of the ducks they find.

“It’s exciting to see more people getting into it,” Coya Dorsey said. “We hope to do this monthly. It’s been a lot of fun. There’s not a whole lot for families to do sometimes, and people have said finding one of the ducks has made their day.”

Coya Dorsey is excited to find ways for her daughter to give back and be more in touch with her community.

“Our world is becoming more hateful, but something as little as a duck can make someone feel better,” Coya Dorsey said. “I dealt with a lot of bullying when I was younger and don’t want anyone to feel the way I felt.”
